Thanksgiving Food & Pet Safety
Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, fellowship, fun, and FOOD! Pets will want to join in on the yumminess, but it’s important to keep them safe and protect them from potentially harmful and toxic food.
Alcohol
Alcohol can be toxic for pets even in small amounts. Don’t forget there may be alcohol in prepared foods as well.
Green Beans
Plain green beans and fresh vegetables are great for pets! Be cautious about casseroles that have other ingredients and seasonings that may be toxic.
Chocolate
Chocolate is a big no-no when it comes to pets. Don’t neglect baking chocolate that may be hidden in recipes.
Macaroni and Cheese
Mac-n-Cheese can be ok for pets that handle dairy well. Some pets become lactose intolerant as they age, so be cautious or keep the macaroni plain.
Xylitol
Sweeteners containing xylitol are particularly dangerous for pets and potentially deadly for dogs.
Cranberry Sauce
Your pet may safely enjoy a small bit of this as a treat. Be careful that it doesn’t contain too much sugar.
Grapes
Aside from being a choking hazard, grapes and raisins are toxic to pets and can potentially cause kidney failure in dogs.
Mashed Potatoes
Potatoes are safe for your pet to enjoy on their own, but toppings or additions such as cheese, sour cream, butter, onions, and gravies are no-no’s in a pet’s diet.
Alliums
Consuming onions, garlic, scallions, leeks, et al can lead to toxic anemia in pets. Smaller, cooked portions of these may be ok if you know your pet’s digestive system can handle it, but it’s better to err on the side of safety and skip anything with alliums in them.
Turkey
A wonderful lean protein, white turkey meat is safe to share with your pet provided you remove all the bones and excess fat and skin.
